Gmail is changing in 2026: End of support for professional emails via POP3/external accounts
What Google Announced
Google has announced that starting in early January 2026, Gmail will drop the ability to receive and manage emails other than Gmail accounts through old connection methods, such as the POP3 protocol and the Gmailify service.
This means that you will no longer be able to have your professional email account (such as info@yoursite.gr) automatically enter your Gmail inbox via the "Check mail from other accounts" feature.
What is Being Discontinued
Currently, Gmail has a settings option where you can add external email accounts so that you can:
Receive incoming mail from other mail servers directly into your Gmail,
And send emails as info@yoursite.gr from within the Gmail interface.
This feature relies on the POP3 protocol and the function called Gmailify. With the 2026 change, these will be permanently removed from Gmail.
How This Affects You
If today:
you have configured Gmail to receive emails from your professional email (info@yoursite.gr) via POP3,
or you use the Gmailify feature to manage your professional account along with your personal Gmail,
then this setting will stop working from 2026.
This does not mean you will lose your emails — it simply means Gmail will no longer download them automatically. You will need to use other methods to view and respond to messages.
What You Can Do Instead
There are a few alternative solutions to continue managing your professional email:
✅ Configure the account with IMAP on an email client (e.g., Outlook, Thunderbird, Apple Mail). IMAP provides full synchronization and is a modern protocol.
✅ Enable forwarding from your domain's server to a Gmail account. This way you will receive emails normally in Gmail, but their management will not be done via the old POP3 function.
✅ Use a professional Google Workspace account with a custom domain, which operates differently from free Gmail and is not affected by this change. (This is a paid solution.)
Why This Change is Happening
Google wants to improve security, simplify account management, and focus on more modern communication methods, instead of older protocols like POP3, which do not sync well across devices.
🧠 Conclusion
📌 From January 2026, Gmail will no longer support the automatic addition/reception of professional account emails via POP3 or Gmailify.
If you are using this feature today for info@yoursite.gr, you will need to adjust your strategy (e.g., forwarding, IMAP, or Workspace).
